Ageism and Age Discrimination: Understanding and Combating the Issue

Published on 24 July 2024 at 13:04

What is ageism? What exactly is age discrimination? What can be done about it? Do companies and hiring managers really discriminate based on age?

Ageism is defined as prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person's age. Age discrimination involves treating an applicant or employee less favorably because of their age. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) forbids age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older [7].

According to recent studies, individuals over the age of 50 are more than twice as likely as other workers to be unemployed for two years or longer if they lose their current job [8]. Is this age-related? The answer is complex. Job descriptions and qualifications can often be discouraging. For instance, a mid-level engineering position offering $45,000 a year requires five years of experience and a master’s degree. Such expectations can be unrealistic and disheartening for experienced professionals.

The job market is highly competitive, with hundreds of thousands of applications submitted daily. This competition spans all levels, from entry positions to senior roles. Factors such as appearance, behavior, and age influence every aspect of job applications and promotions. Additionally, many senior workers who retired a few years ago are re-entering the workforce, creating a dynamic mix of new, young, and senior workers. This presents a significant challenge for recruiting professionals and HR personnel.

The ADEA forbids companies from discriminating against workers aged 40 and older [7]. However, finding a new job requires staying current with job market trends, regardless of age. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed resume formats and the use of action verbs. While AI can reject resumes, it can also assist in crafting them. Knowing how to prompt AI effectively is crucial.

Interviewing has also evolved. Behavioral questions are now common, and preparation is key. On my “products page,” you can download a free spreadsheet with sample questions and answers.

When preparing for an interview, whether in person or virtual, self-confidence is essential. Negative thoughts such as “they think I am too old” or “I am not up on current trends” can undermine your confidence. Studies show that such thoughts can deepen depression and lead to earlier mortality [8]. It’s important to combat these feelings and approach the interview with a positive mindset.

No company will openly admit to not hiring someone because of their age, as it is illegal. However, feelings of age bias can persist. If you don’t get the job, it’s essential to change your mindset and continue your job search with resilience.

Tools to Battle Ageism

Exercise – Boosts confidence.

Dress for success – Business casual is often appropriate.

Stand up straight – Improves health and confidence.

Eat healthier – opt for veggies or frozen yogurt over sweets.

Drink water – Enhances concentration.

Learn continually – Stay updated on new trends like AI, Excel, and project management.

By adopting these strategies, you can improve your chances of finding the right job and overcoming age-related challenges in the job market.
